Advanced Induction Heat Treatment Technologies and Design Methods
This paper presents an overview of advanced induction technologies in heat treating and surface treatment as well as modern methods of design. Special attention is devoted to the newest technologies such as induction thermo chemical treatment of different metals, simultaneous dual frequency hardening, etc. The material of the paper is based on the analysis of literature and first hand experience of the author as Director of Research at Fluxtrol Inc. Advanced design methods use computer simulation and computer-assisted engineering. Using modern software it is possible to make a preliminary design of an induction system, its optimization and prediction of the performance. Experiments may be required for verification of developed solutions and preparation of samples for validation of the treated material response. Design and engineering of the induction process and tools (inductors, quenching rings etc.) with extensive use of simulation may be called virtual prototyping due to high accuracy and good adequacy to real processes and equipment. Special attention is paid to magnetic flux control in an induction system that provides the system parameters improvement, energy saving and better quality of treatment.
