Wear and Corrosion Resistance of Self-fluzing Coatings with the Addition of Hard Particles

An engineering component generally fails due to defects originated on the surface that propagate and compromise the entire structure. The use of protective coatings produced by thermal spraying may overcome the requirements of several harsh environments, such as those found in chemical, petrochemical and oil industry. The addition of hard particles to the matrix of an alloy can homogeneously increase hardness and wear resistance. The aim of this work is to analyze the micro-abrasive wear and the corrosion behavior of two thermal-sprayed, self-fluxing NiCrBSiC alloys; one with the addition of boron carbide (B4C) and the other with the addition of yttria stabilized zirconia (ZrO2/Y2O3). Wear tests were conducted using a free ball machine employing alumina and diamond as abrasives. The corrosion experiments were performed in natural sea water using polarization curves. It was found that the addition hard particles hardened the matrix and increased wear and corrosion resistance of the coatings compared to the material without these additions. The addition of boron carbide produced higher wear resistance than the material with zirconia and the reference NiCrBSiC alloy. The corrosion resistance in natural sea water increased after the addition of zirconia and boron carbide. The addition of zirconia resulted in the higher corrosion resistance.
