Influence of ECAE Preheating on the Microstructure of Nickel-Titanium

Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) alloy was fabricated by high temperature equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) process. The influence of ECAE preheating on the microstructure of NiTi alloy was investigated. The preheating temperature of NiTi alloy ranged from 750℃ to 950℃, and the ram speed was 25mm/s. The initial coarse grains of NiTi alloy were refined after single pass at each temperature, and the grain size was refined from 20 μm to 8 μm. At higher preheating temperature, for example, 950℃, there was no difference in the microstructure of the alloy between after single pass ECAE and after two or three passes ECAE. However, with the decrease of preheating temperature, the degree of grain refinement was more obvious. The essential factors for the microstructure of NiTi alloy during ECAE process were also discussed.
