Optimizing Heat Treatment for a Duplez Stainless Steel

Different heat treatments have been employed on a duplex stainless steel (DSS). The microstructure, phase, hardness, and corrosion behavior in several aggressive media of the treated DSS have been investigated. The results show that increasing solution temperature increased hardness slightly and had few influences on corrosion resistance of the solution-treated DSS. Sigma phase precipitated from 5 phase and some 8 transformed to γ during the ageing following the solution treatment. As a result, hardness of the aged DSS increased a lot. Anodic polarization test revealed that the corrosion resistance of those aged DSS was lower than that of DSS only solution-treated. The decreasing extent was influenced by the corrosion media. In the lmol/L NaCl solution, the corrosion resistance of those aged DSS was reduced dramatically; while almost no influence was observed for the aged DSS in the passivation zone of the anodic polarization curves in 0.2mol/L H2SO4 or lmol/L H3PO4 solution. As corrosive wear resistance depends on materials both anti-corrosion and anti-wear ability, it is suggested that corrosive wear resistance of DSS to certain service condition can be improved by properly increasing hardness with an appropriate heat treatment.
