Effects of Direct Current Field on Powder-pack Aluminizing

Conventional powder-pack aluminizing (CPA) has shortcomings of high treating temperature, long soaking time and low efficiency in utilizing aluminizing media. For overcoming them, direct current field (DCF) has been applied on the specimen and aluminizing agents. The specimen in the shape of plate or tube was taken as cathode of the DCF. The anode in the shape of plate or column paralleled to the specimen. Effects of DCF to CPA have been studied. The treated cases microstructure, phases, thickness and oxidation resistance have been investigated. The results show that DCF has the function of enhancing aluminizing with great energy saving, even at a temperature below 750℃. It is proposed that DCF drives active Al-containing species to diffuse toward the specimen. This makes active Al concentration around the specimen higher than that at other positions and that in CPA, which relatively decreases absorption to Al by inner surface of the pack box and the non-working surface of the specimen. DCFs physical effect of promoting chemical reaction in the agent increases activity and productivity of Al-containing species, which overcomes the shortcoming that CPA can not produce enough Al-containing species only by conventional way of heating at lower temperature.
