Gas Carburization of the Miniature Gear Mode of Low Carbon Steel
A novel technique of carburization of miniature gear using in the micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) has been studied. The AISI 1020 carbon steel was chosen as the experimental material, and the ccarburization was conducted at 870℃ for 10 to 30 minutes in a controlled endothermic atmosphere. The carbon potential of the atmosphere has been governed by the changing of propane and air ratio into an endothermic gas generator which produced the carrier gas and addition the same propane into the carrier gas. The specimens were directly water quenched from the carburizing temperature and followed by a 200℃ tempering. The microstructures, morphologies, phase structures, surface roughness, and hardness distribution of the specimens were investigated. The basic criterion of carbon content of the carburized surface is 0.8 - 0.9% and the effective case depth of the specimens should fall into the range of 0.08 and 0.15mm, the hardness of the carburized surface and the core should be at the range of 700~750HV and 350-450HV, respectively.
