Boronizing of Maraging Steel (C-250 grade): Evaluation of Wear Behavior

Maraging steels are used in applications where high strength/ weight ratio associated with good toughness are necessary. These steels belong to the class of high strength steels that possess a combination of strength and toughness that are among the highest attainable by the general engineering alloys. Surface treatments can be an efficient way to improve the wear resistance of this kind of steels. Boronizing is a thermo-chemical surface treatment that utilizes boron diffusion into the surface of metals and alloys to produce metallic borides which is a promising method of improving surface performance of engineering components while preserving the substrate properties. In this work, a maraging steel (250 grade) was bonded using the salt bath method which produced a high hardness surface layer. After boronizing, a large increase in wear resistance of this steel relative to the un-borided condition was observed.
