New Polymer Quenchant with Improved Cooling Evenness

Polymer quenchants have a high cooling performance, and is advantageous to prevention of fire. Therefore it is applied to the solution treatment of the aluminum alloy or the quenching of steel materials especially for large-sized parts. However, their extent of use is limited because their liquid maintenance is complicated, and yield a large quenching distortion. We have developed a new polymer quenchant with a short vapor blanket stage. The new polymer quenchant is superior in cooling uniformity. Because the vapor blanket stage is short, cooling unevenness is lowered and this can lead to a reduction in quenching distortion. Furthermore the new polymer quenchant improves the corruption resistance and rust prevention characteristics over that seen with conventional polymer quenchants. In Japan, we have recently standardized JIS K2242 B-Method as a management method for polymer coolants. This has contributed to the quality stabilization of the heat-treatments by definitively evaluating the cooling performance of polymer quenchant. The new polymer quenchant has shown a stable operation in some users.
