Numerical Simulation on Loss of Iron Scale in Soaking Furnace

The influences of the heating rate, the soaking temperature, the preservation time and the hearth atmosphere for a 65Mn slab in an experimental reheating furnace on the loss of iron scale of the slab were studied using Computational Fluid Dynamics software FLUENT 6.3. The results show that, on complete combustion condition, the oxidizing velocity of the slab increased with the heating temperature increasing when the amount of the air for fuel combustion was constant, which will increase the heat transfer resistance on slab surface and then decrease the heating velocity. In addition, when the heating temperature was kept constant, the loss of the iron scale would increase with the heating time and the amount of the air for fuel combustion increasing. The predictions were consistent with the experimental results, which was useful for adjusting operational parameters to control the scale formation.
