The Effect of Si on Properties of PEO Coatings on Al-Si Alloys

Ceramic coatings were deposited on Al-Si alloys by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). The Al-Si alloys with 6.4% Si and 15.6% Si in weight were chosen as substrates. The morphology, composition and microstructure of the PEO coatings were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The distributions of hardness (H) and elastic modulus (E) across the coatings were determined by nano-indentation method. Scratch test was used to study the interfacial bonding strength of these coatings. It was found that there were more cracks and pores existing in coating on the substrate with high content of Si. XRD results showed that coatings consisted of α-Al2O3, γ-Al2O3 and mullite. Furthermore, the diffraction peaks of Al phase were indicated on XRD pattern for PEO coating on the alloy with 15.6% Si. The hardness and elastic modulus reduced with the increase of content of Si, from 12 Gpa to 4.8GPa and 180 Gpa to 80 Gpa respectively. As a result of scratch test, the interfacial bonding strength of coating on the alloy with low content of Si was three times than that on the other substrate.
