Fabrication of Ti-Al Intermetallics Particles by Combined Depositing Micro Ti Powder/ Al Droplets on Substrate

A new method which based on co-deposition of solid/liquid particles is demonstrated for making intermetallics particles. Micro quantitative Ti powder and Al droplets are deposited successively on a fixed-point of pre-heated substrate. Liquid Al then reacts with Ti particles to synthesize intermetallics particles. The Ti powder can be fed in fixed-quantity and fixed-point with ultrasonic vibration feeding (UVF) method. Uniform Al droplets are sprayed by pneumatic droplet-on-demand (DOD) method. Some regular components were fabricated by depositing Al droplets point-by-point. It indicated that the Al droplets can be accurately deposited on the substrate. Before the reactive experiments, a catalyst of Ni powder was added to Ti powder for promote the reaction of Ti-Al system. The mixed powder and Al droplets were deposited on the same location of the substrate, and the molten Al infiltrated into the mixed powder under the action of capillary, then intermetallics particles generated immediately because of combustion reaction. TiAl_3 phase was formed in the intermetallics particles, which can be proved by the metallograph observation and X-ray diffraction (XRD) identification.
