Simulated Weld Test of Cadmium Free Contacts
Dynamic contact welding due to arcing in contact bounce are compared for various Cd free contacts in rivet form with a model switch. This included various Ag/SnO2 material of 8 to 14% oxides made by powder metal extrusion as well as internal oxidation. The cumulative plots showed the anti-welding dependence on oxide content and oxide particle size. The various surface microstructure changes due to the arcing and welding events are also examined by scanning electron microscopy and metallurgical examination of rivet cross sections. The surface melting and reactions to redistribute the oxides are found especially with regard to tin oxide and indium oxide layer formations.
