Diagnostic Testing of Compression Connectors of Overhead Power Lines
Many electric utilities are concerned about the reliability of the connectors that join the conductors of overhead power transmission lines. A novel approach for diagnostic testing of such connectors is described. The electrical resistance of the joint as a function of current is determined by applying current pulses with peak values up to and above the rated load current of the line. The condition and reliability of the electric contact interfaces of the connector can then be assessed with basis in the temperature of the contact spots, which is indirectly observable from the measured resistance vs. current relationship. Tests performed on joints removed from service show that the method is able to accurately determine the electrical condition of the joint and to disclose contact degradation at a very early stage.
