A Study on the Contact Materials for Miniature Reed Switches
A requirement for miniaturization of reed switches especially rises in recent years. The authors developed a reed switch having a 5.5mm glass tube to meet a requirement for miniaturization. The dimensions of two blades inside the glass tube need to be smaller to miniaturize reed switches. However, a smaller dimension inside the glass tube results in reduced contact force and causes the contact failure. Therefore, the authors have developed iridium contact reed switches. Iridium has some superior physical characteristics such as higher melting points and higher hardness in comparison with rhodium, and is suitable for the contact material. The authors have already confirmed that iridium contact perform better than rhodium contact in a resistive load, a capacitive load and an inductive load respectively. The authors examined iridium contact reed switches on a lamp and 2.7ohm resistance load circuit of DC14V in common use this time. As a result, the authors also confirmed that iridium contact reed switches performed better than rhodium contact reed switches.
