The Reliability Evaluation for Electric Power Protection Devices
relay protection plays an important role in the electric power system, the evaluation of its reliability is commonly based on the hours of MTBF (Mean time between failures). In fact it is an experience data and without testing, we have not any effective methods to evaluate the reliability of relay these years, we always give the index of MTBF of relay by estimation, and can not be used by utility to valuate the performance of relay. With the development of IEC 61850, the digitalization technology is widely used in the relay; it is a new challenge of the reliability evaluation of relay. Based on many years relay testing and its reliability research, this paper gives a new method to evaluate the reliability of relay from the viewpoint of life cycle of relay. The key point of this paper is using the Relay Year to represent the MTBF of relay. This index can easily be used to compare the reliability of different relays. Base on the reliability evaluation model for relay, it gives according testing methods; it is a practical and operational method for the reliability evaluation of relay. From theory to practice, this paper describes the reliability evaluation model and testing method, it gives a good support for the manufacture in their reliability evaluation of relay, and also gives a good index for the utility in their relay chosen.
