Dynamic compressive response of soft biological tissues
Injuries in occupational, sports, and vehicle accidents are often caused by impact by hard surfaces.Such mechanically induced injuries should be most efficiently predicted by mechanics tools such as numerical models that account for the characteristics of individual person. However, realistic predictions of numerical simulations require accurate material models for biological tissues under impact loading conditions, which are currently scarce.Kolsky bar is an effective experimental method to obtain rate-dependent responses for engineering materials. When the material is very soft, such as the soft tissues, testing conditions on the Kolsky bar experiments need to be closed monitored and carefully controlled. This article lists the challenges in Kolsky bar experiments on tissues and present remedies to obtain reliable stress-strain behavior of soft tissues under valid dynamic testing conditions.
