Dependence of ductile fracture on stress triaziality factor

Ductile fracture is usually the main failure mode for the ductile material,which typically exhibits the ductile dimples on the fracture surface.The fracture surface of the single edge notched bending (SENB) specimens shows that shear lips prevail near the surface and the flat fracture surface prevails on the mid-thickness.FEA results show that the stress triaxiality is usually smaller at the surface than that on the mid-thickness plane and the crack propagates almost along the maximum value of the stress triaxiality factor.Continuum damage model with random distribution of the void volume fraction is introduced to investigate the difference of the crack growth direction under different stress state of plane stress and plane strain.Computation results show that the angel of the crack growth direction of plane stress is larger,which could explain the existence of the shear lips in the point of the ductile crack growth direction.
