Compliance method used for several kinds of specimens in fracture tests based on numerical analysis
A systematical research on the relation between compliance and crack length for non-standard specimens and standard specimens was carried out by finite element analysis (FEA).Based on compliance method,a set of formulas for crack length measurement of chevron specimens and CT(W) specimens were proposed. The uncertainty on the dimensions and crack shapes for standard compact tensile (CT) specimens and single edged notch bending (SEB) specimens recommended in current test standards was investigated and some helpful results were obtained.A two-parameter model used for compliance prediction of the equivalent elastic modulus for CT and SEB specimens was proposed. Finally,an investigation was made on the effective elastic modulus for a special CT specimen of composite materials which contain two materials with different elastic modulus, and it was indicated that elastic modulus ratio of two materials and out-layer height h had an evident effect on the effective elastic modulus of the CT specimen.
