Prediction on fracture initiation at the interface corner of composite components
Delamination started from an interface corner is one of the major failure modes of cross-plied laminates and bonded/co-cured joints.This paper focuses on crack initiation at the interface corner of composite components.This paper suggests that the failure stress which is commonly used to predict the crack initiation should be replaced by a new term consisting of both stress intensity factor and singularity orders.With the utilization of published test results,finite element analysis is conducted to predict the singularity behavior of stress field in the vicinity of interface comer along the interface.Based on the analytical results,a new fracture criterion is proposed to predict the fracture initiation at the corner along the interface.The validation of this new criterion is also conducted in this paper.
