Understanding on surface cracking under cyclic thermomechanical contact conditions
The surface quality of mechanical components under cyclic thermomechanical contact condition is critical for engineering ranging from microelectronics to steel industry. For understanding of the surface cracking under cyclic thermal-mechanical load conditions,a brief methodology is reviewed. The mechanisms of wear and cracking are closely related, with each typically starting from small surface cracks.Models that attempt to be more sophisticated have been developed, but they include parameters that are determined empirically, unknown or assumed to be constant.Spalling due to the micro-cracking of the surface with oxide scales is investigated in this paper.A simple model is suggested for estimation the critical parameters of surface cracking.
