Ezperimental study on the surface/subsurface damage of alumina by nanoindentation
Alumina ceramic has been extensively used such as tool, bearing, abrasive material, spark plug and vacuum tube. The machined alumina components may contain such surface/subsurface damages that influence strongly their performance and reliability. The alumina bulk samples are chosen to study the surface/subsurface indentation induced damage by na-noindentaiton.The elastic modulus under various indenting loads are measured with conical and Berkovich tip.The variation of the elastic modulus and indentation induced damage with load and displacement are analyzed in detail. The proposed efforts will be a foundation for further studying the indentation damage theories of the ceramics.
