Failure analysis of oil tubes attached to ethylene compressor
A failure analysis is performed for an oil tube of the ethylene compressor. The tube is made of a stainless steel with diameter of 3/8 inch.It is broken at the connection with a Swagelok nut. Both macroscopic inspection and microscopic scanning electron fractography are carried out.The results indicate that the failure of oil tube was caused by high cycle fatigue due to transverse vibration.Fatigue crack initiated from the sharp point of groove related to the severe stress concentration. To improve the reliability and optimize the design of oil tube of ethylene compressor, the minimum length of oil tube along the vertical direction is suggested and thus the fatigue load exerted on the oil tube is reduced. On the other hand, the machining approach should be selected carefully for the oil tube to improve the surface quality and thus eliminate the possibility of fatigue initiation.
