Infrared thermography for non-destructive evaluation of aluminum alloy LY12CZ under low cycle fatigue

Aluminum alloy LY12CZ plain specimens of Low Cycle Fatigue (LCF) were tested on Instron8801 servo-hydraulic machine.During the whole loading process,a TbermaSC3000 infrared (IR) camera was used to monitor the surface ther-mographic images and the temperature response of the specimens.Lüders Bands were found during fatigue tests and static tension tests. The test results and fractographic analysis showed that both of the surface temperature variation and the micro-morphology were depended on the load rate and stress levels.Damage evolution was discussed base on residual modulus and cumulative plastic strain energy.A parameter Q,defined as the heat energy dissipated in a unit volume of material per cycle, was derived from Fouriers Law of the thermal conduction during fatigue loading.Compared with cumulative plastic strain energy,Q fairly well agreed with damage.
