Viewing Angle Characteristics of a Liquid Crystal Cell with a Grating Surface

The problem of viewing angle in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) has always been a focus. The liquid crystal cell with a grating surface has a better viewing angle characteristics comparing with other LCDs. In this paper, we study the viewing angle characteristics of this cell theoretically. With an equivalent anchoring energy formula for grating surface and elastic theory of the liquid crystal, a hybrid aligned nematic (HAN) liquid crystal cell proposed by Bryan-Brown et al is considered. By means of variation theory we obtain equilibrium equations and boundary conditions for tilt angle and twist angle of director. Based on these equilibrium equations and boundary conditions, the distribution of director of the liquid crystal molecules are calculated using the finite-difference iterative method. With the extended Jones matrix method, we calculate the transmittance and simulate the electro-optical property of liquid crystal cell. Finally, through the calculation of director distribution and light transmittance we make the viewing angle characteristic curves, and analyze the influence of different geometric parameters of grating surface on viewing angle characteristics.
