V-shaped Molecular Model With Twofold Biaziality For Biazial Nematics
Simulations on hard-boomerang fluids previously suggested 1 that the V-shaped (or bent-core) molecules could exhibit a stable biaxial nematic phase. In our paper we consider a different fluid of V-shaped molecules, each composed of two arms jointed at their ends at an angle Ψ. Each arm is a spheroplatelet with its biaxiality. The biaxiality of the V-shaped molecule depends upon this inner biaxiality, and the apex angle Ψ. In this sense our V-shaped molecular model has twofold biaxiality. The occurence of nametic order in such a system has been investigated by Straleyˇs theory, and by bifurcation analysis. We explore the location for the Landau point in terms of particle parameters. We also report the relationship between the structure parameters of the considered molecules and the ability of the relevant fluid to form a biaxial nematic phase.
