Liquid Crystal Display Device with Two Crossed-Grating Surface Substrates
The liquid crystal display device with two crossed-grating surface substrates is investigated from point of view of theoretical analysis. With the Frank elastic theory and the equivalent anchoring energy formula of the grating surface substrate, the Gibbs free energy of this liquid crystal cell system, containing the energy induced by flexoeletric effect, is given. Then, the fundamental equations are derived by using the variation theory. Based on these equations and these boundary conditions, distributions of the tilt angle and the twist angle of director with different applied voltage can be calculated by using the finite-difference iterative method. Finally, applying the extended Jones matrix method, the electro-optical characteristic curve of this kind of liquid crystal cell is obtained. It is very clear that the electro-optical effect of liquid crystal display device with two crossed-grating surface substrates is dependent on the geometrical parameter and anchoring strength of grating surface substrate and flexoelectric coefficients of liquid crystal.
