OLEDs with a monolayer of polystyrene microspheres
An ordered monolayer of polyethylene (PS) microspheres (MS) with diameter of around 3 μm was prepared by self-assembly method on microscope cover glass. The PS MS monolayer was optically coupled (by refractive-index-matched material) on the outside of an OLED, with structure of Glass/ITO (40 nm)/NPB (40 nm)/Alq3 (60 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm) as a light scattering layer. We found that the OLED with a monolayer of PS MS exhibit improved (about 50%) front space luminous flux compared to the control devices, which indicates that part of the light confined wave-guided within the substrates can be extracted to the front space through scattering effects of the monolayer of PS MS. We also found that the PS MS monolayer has no effects on the electroluminescence spectrum distribution with viewing angle.
