Skin Color Correction by Eliminating the Simultaneous Color Contrast Effect

The human perception of skin colors is always influenced by surrounding colors due to simultaneous color contrast effect. This paper presents a color correction scheme for reducing the shift in skin color perception to a minima such that the human skin colors against the background of whatever color can be perceived as those against the background color of mid-gray. The skin color is corrected pixel-wise by modifying the associated gamma parameters of the GOG models that characterizes the electro-optical transfer functions (EOTF) of the three primary color channels of the LCD device. The results of the subjective experiments using paired comparison show that the corrected skin colors are perceived to be more close to the skin colors surrounded by merely the color of mid-gray. The experimental results also show that the visual quality of the image with corrected skin colors is in average more acceptable than that of the image without correcting skin colors.
