Regional groundwater flow modeling in Chaiwopu Basin and River Valley
Groundwater in Chaiwopu Basin and River Valley accounts for a large amount of quantities during supplying water for Urumqi City. In order to find out the optimal groundwater development plan to achieve the sustainable development, a regional groundwater flow model was constructed for the study area. Hydrogeological parameters were calibrated against observed groundwater level hydrographs and flow field. Then, the model was used to analyze the flow system, vertical leakage between different modeled layers and the trend of groundwater levels changes. The study shows that there are two dominant regional flow systems in the area: one is along the main course of Urumqi River; another is the capture zone of Chaiwopu Lake and Salt Lakes. The vertical exchanges gradually decline with the increase depth. Because of the adjustment of the large groundwater storage, the groundwater level shows stable variations and gradual decline.
