Natural attenuation of TCE contaminated groundwater
Natural attenuation of TCE contaminated groundwater was predicted using MODFLOW and RT3D. The study area is an industrial complex in Wonju, Korea. In the modeling, adsorption, biodegradation and pump and treat were considered. Not considering adsorption and biodegradation, TCE plume is expected to exist with substantial concentrations over 20 years in Wonju-stream area. In addition, if remaining TCE in the soil near the road management office is leaching into groundwater, TCE plume is also predicted to remain with high concentration over 20 years in the site. Also DCE and VC concentrations appear to decrease with plume movement. Considering both of adsorption and biodegradation, movement of plume appears to be negligible and it exists over 20 years in the site. Considering biodegradation only, TCE plume is expected to disappear within 4 years in the site. However, DCE and VC appear to rapidly increase. Not considering biodegradation, DCE plume is expected to exist over 10 years in the Wonju-stream area. Considering biodegradation, DCE plume is expected to disappear over 5 years. Considering biodegradation and pump and treat, DCE plume is expected to totally disappear over 3 years in the site. However, VC plume is expected to extensively exist over 10 years in the site.
