NEW NANOFLUIDIC INTERFACE FOR ONLINE PRE-CONCENTRATION OF CHARGED SPECTIES IN CAPILLARY CHIP ELECTROPHORESIS
By HF etching the outside wall of fused silica capillary, ion conductive fused silica membrane with pores of nanometer scale was formed and used as a new nanofluidics interface. By voltage bias with anode inside, rhodamine 6G (1. 2 nm) in 1 mM pH 8. 5 Tris-HCl inside the capillary was pre-concentrated on the cathode side (outside), and fluorescien (0. 7 nm) was also found accumulated at the cathode side, indicating a typical concentration polarization effect of nano ion channels. Neutral rhodamine B (1. 6 nm) was not found permeable through the membrane, indicating that the pore size is of nanometer scale. It is shown here that, this membrane could not only be used for electro-concentration of protein and dsDNA molecules, but also for small charged molecules. This membrane is easy to prepare, rigid, transparent, and multiple applications could be developed as an online sample processing unit in chip electrophoresis.
