PREPARATION OF MESOPOROUS SILICA AND ITS EFFECT ON THE STABILITY OF CHLOROPHYLL

There is considerable demand for cosmetic and food colorants from natural sources that can serve as alternatives to the use of synthetic dyes due to both legislative action and consumer concerns over the use of synthetic additives. However, the extensive application of natural pigments was circumscribed because natural pigments show limited stability to several processing, formulation and storage conditions. Mesoporous silica with high surface area and excellent functionality of anti-ultraviolet radiation shows potential application as vector of organic pigment. In this paper, mesoporous silica with the diameter ranged from 100 ran to 200 nm was prepared and the stability of chlorophyll in micro-emulsion containing mesoporous silica was investigated. Results showed that mesoporous silica could enhance the stability of chlorophyll under the treatment of sun illumination and the treatment of 2% H2O2.
