A Multi-modal Modeling Approach for Interactive Design and Manufacture

Computer aided design and manufacturing techniques have advanced considerably in recent years so that it is getting easier to develop complicated digital models and plan the relevant manufacturing processes. Currently, such techniques have mainly relied on a single modality, that is , our visual sense. To further enhance the efficiency and user-friendliness of current computer aided design and manufacturing techniques, user-interface techniques incorporating multi-modal senses such as auditory, haptic, visual, etc. are being developed. In this paper, studies on several design and manufacturing processes have been presented. When using the proposed system to design a product, since the haptic sense has been modeled, some physical properties such as elasticiry and surface roughness of a product model can be tested or felt by the designer without the need of making physical prototypes. Once a design is done, manufacturing process planning (including some inspection planning) of the design model can be performed more easily and efficiently using the proposed multi-modal user interface.
