RECENT RESEARCH ON THE HYDROGEOLOGICAL AND SETTLEMENT CHARACTERISTICS OF LANDFILLED MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE
The paper starts with an overview of the changes in the philosophy of landfill design and waste composition that have taken place in the western world over the past 50 years. This provides a context for a summary of the natural processes within landfills that a modern landfill engineer must have knowledge of and take into account. The importance of fluid flow and waste settlement is highlighted; and some research that has led to an improved understanding of the factors governing these processes is described and discussed. Finally, the challenges associated with new waste types now being landfilled in the EU are considered.
