SODIUM REDUCTION AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE
High levels of salt consumption are common in many countries that have the high life expectancies. A number of these countries are exporters of well-establishedtraditionally-processed foods. Thus, it is possible that a requirement for reduced salt in processed foods may be looked upon as a trade barrier by food-exporting countries and cause a dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
