The Superconducting Properties of Spark Plasma Sintered MgB2 Powders Fabricated by Ball Milling

MgB2 has higher transition temperature (Tc) of 39K than that of other metallic superconductor and the bulk form of MgB2 has exhibited high current density. In this study, the Mg powders under 10 micrometer and B powders under 3 micrometer were mixed or milled for 9 hours maximum at argon atmosphere. The MgB2 bulk was fabricated with mixed powders in the graphite molds from 600 to 1000℃ by Spark Plasma Sintering. The formation of MgB2 phase was confirmed with XRD and EDS, and the microstructure of SPSed MgB2. and the transition temperature was measured. The relative density of sintered MgB2 was 97%, which increased as the sintering temperature increases. The sintering proceeded with solid phase and liquid phase sintering phenomena step by step without abnormal grain growth. The Tc(critical temperature) was about 37K at the carbon added sintered sample. The 300 nano meter size MgB2 grains of the hexagonal shape could be formed after spark plasma sintering, but MgB4 phase was undesirable to obtain precise Tc.
