Preparation and Photo-catalytic Activity of Tm Doped TiO2 Nanoparticles
Tm doped TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by hydrolysis-precipitation method and characterized by the techniques including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD). Analytical results demonstrated that TiO2 nanoparticles were spherical shape. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution was used as a probe reaction to evaluate their photocatalytic activity. The results displayed that all the TiO2 catalysts doped with Tm3 + increased the percentage of degradation of MB. Moreover, it was observed that TiO2 catalyst containing 0.026g of Tm3 + shows higher catalytic activity under the visible light radiation. The crystalline phase of Tm3 + doped TiO2 calcined at 550℃ for 2 h showed only anatase phase, which results in the higher photocatalytic activiy. Therefore, Tm doping could inhibit the phase transformation and decreases the crystallite size of TiO2. With the increasing of pH from 3 to 7, the percentage of degradation increased from 25% to 65% for MB. This can be explained that the size of nano TiO2 particle is affected by the pH value of the solution, which results in the difference of the catalytic activity.
