Synthesis and Characterization of Ce-Al Pillared Hectorite Nano-composite

The Ce-Al pillared hectorite nano-composite powders were prepared by mcrowave intercalation reaction method using synthetic hectorite as the interlayered clay, and using Ce-Al mixed solutions as the compound cation pillaring agents which were made by adding 0.5 mol·L-1 NaOH solution into a mixed solution containing 0.2mol·L-1 Ce(NO3)3 and 0. 2mol· L-1 AlCl3, meanwhile the pH value of the mixed system was controlled to 9 ~10. The microstructure and properties of the Ce-Al pillared nano-composite powders were characterized by specific surface area measurement, FT-IR, XRD, TEM, SEM. The results showed that cerium and aluminum cations could be intercalated into the structure of hectorite as the form of CeO2 and Al2O3, which would cause the nano-composite to form a layered microcrystalline structure having more intensive crystallinity. With the increase of mass ratio (Xm) of Ce-Al pillaring agent and hectorite from 0.00 to 0.10, the BET surface areas of hectorite (Xm = 0.00) and the Ce-Al pillared hectorite were increased from 189.3 m · g to 298.1 m2 · g-1 , and the d001 values of layer spacing were enlarged from 1.3771 nm to 1.3923 nm. As the Xm increased, the delaminated lamellar structure of the Ce-Al pillared hectorite was more remakable, aboundant and regular, and the layer crystallinity was also improved gradually, the delaminated lamellar microcrystalline structure indicateded the properties of the Ce-Al pillared hectorite nano-composites could be effectively improved in catalysis, adsorption, ion-exchange and other application fields.
