Separation and Study of Cetyltrimethylammonium Ion Intercalated Trioctahedral Smectite with Reduced Layer Charge

Pristine clays were saturated with Mg2+ and subsequently heated at different temperatures, then modified by cetyltrimethylammonium ion (CTA ) and finally dispersed in n-butanol, from which a series of hydrophobic trioctahedral smectite gels with reduced layer charge were obtained through delamination and restacking. The viscocity of resulting materials increases gradually with the gradual reduction of layer charge owing to the weaker electrostatic attraction force between layers, however, if layer charge is too low, the resultant hydrophobic gel would yield low viscocity due to the mild destruction of expandable interlayers and the subsequent development of unexpandable structures. The study demonstrates that these hydrophobic gels with excellent viscocity for particular applications can be prepared by controlling the amount of Mg substitution for octahedral monovalent cation.
