Factors Influencing Size of Polystyrene Microspheres in Emulsifier-free Emulsion Polymerization

As functional polymer materials, monodispersed polystyrene microspheres with microns size could be assembly into photonic crystals. They are of wide prospects for using in many fields such as template materials, optical filer materials, light switch, high-density electromagnetic data storage and chemical and biological chemical sensors, etc. The monodisperse micron - size polystyrene particles were prepared by emulsifier - free emulsion polymerization. The effects of styrene, potassium persulfate concentration and stir velocity on the average diameter of polystyrene and its distribution were mainly investigated. The results showed that with the increasing of concentration of potassium persulfate, particle size increased. With the increasing of concentration of styrene and stir velocity, particle size increased firstly and then decreased. When the concentration of potassium persulfate was 1.0 mg/ml, the concentration of styrene was 0.08 g/mL and stirring velocity was 230 r/min, size of polystyrene particles were 1.4μm and standard deviation was 0.022.SEM of synthesized products and FT-IR contrastive analysis showed that polystyrene was prepared.
