NANOMECHANICS FOR MEMS AND SMART SYSTEMS
An elastic multiple shell model is developed for the vibration analysis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The van der Waals (vdW) interaction between any two tubes of the MWCNT is modeled as the radius-dependent function. The simplified Donnell shell equation is applied to study the free vibration of MWCNT. The natural frequencies are calculated for double-walled CNT (DWCNT), five-walled MWCNT and ten-walled MWCNT. The numerical results show that the vdW interaction has no influence on the fundamental natural frequency but plays a significant role in all higher natural frequencies for various combinations of m and n. The effect of the mode order on the natural frequencies of a MWCNT is also examined in detail.
