OPTIMAL DESIGN OF VISCOELASTIC DAMPERS CONNECTING ADJACENT STRUCTURES

Two adjacent multistory structures are modeled as 2-SDOF system connected each other with viscoelastic damper (VED). Taken the natural vibration frequency ratio, connection stiffness and linking damping ratio as research parameters, the formulation of structural mean squared deviation (MSD) displacement response and research parameters is derived based on the random vibration theory. Then the relationship of the adjacent structural seismic response versus the parameters including connection viscous damping ratio and linking stiffness is presented. Furthermore, the optimal value of damping ratio and stiffness ratio of the linking VED are investigated. Finally, the seismic responses of two 10-story structures with and without connecting dampers, excited by El Centro and Taft waves, are contrastively analyzed. The results indicate fine earthquake-reduction effect of VEDs connecting adjacent structures. It also shows that selecting appropriate damping parameters of dampers cannot reduce the seismic responses of the two structures connected to the best extent simultaneously. The dampers parameters should be determined according to the best seismic mitigation effect of the primary, auxiliary structure or the combined structure system.
