Monitoring Dynamic Characteristics for a Supertall Structure under Construction
The Guangzhou New TV Tower (GNTVT) which has just completed its construction in May 2009 in Guangzhou, China, is a super tall tube-in-tube structure with a total height of 618m. A complicated structural health monitoring (SHM) system consisting of over 700 sensors has being implemented to the GNTVT for both in-construction and inservice real-time monitoring. This paper will introduce the field vibration measurement and present the results of the field vibration measurements under different construction phases and different conditions. The identified results are compared both with GPS measurements and those obtained from the finite element model. The dependency of the identified modal properties on environmental factors is also investigated. The results of this paper supply some references for better understanding the dynamic characteristics of supertall and slender structures.
