COUPLED DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF DEEP WATER FLOATING PLATFORMS – A REVIEW

As the oil companies have entered in deep and ultra deep water conditions, the floating platforms especially spar platforms have been proved to be one of the most suitable solutions for the existing conditions there. Spar platforms analyzed by conventional decoupled analyses proved out to be highly uneconomical as the platform responses predicted by these analyses were overestimated than their actual measurements in the sea. Whereas, in coupled dynamic analysis the coupling effects of risers and supporting guide frames on hull motions, contact forces between risers and supporting guide frames, and mooring line dynamics have to be analyzed. Thus to ensure a reliable response prediction, the dynamic analysis of a deepwater floating platform and the associated mooring/riser system should ideally be fully coupled. The paper presents the review on the coupled dynamic analysis of deepwater floating platforms especially Spar platforms. The paper focuses on the techniques employed in the modeling of the platforms in performing different types of dynamic analyses and their impacts on the response calculations of the platforms and therefore the relative merits and demerits of the employed techniques.
