OPTIMIZATION OF TUNED MASS DAMPER AND SEISMIC EFFECTIVENESS
Performance of tuned mass damper system depends upon mass ratio and frequency ratio. Optimization of these parameters is very important from its effectiveness point of view when it is subjected to wide range of excitation frequency. A simplified methodology for determining the optimum parameters of tuned mass damper is proposed for a base excited damped cantilever beam. The parameters are first evaluated for suppression of dominant first mode of structure under sinusoidal excitation. The parameters optimized include frequency ratio and damping ratio of tuned mass damper for reduction of maximum response of primary structure. The optimum parameters of tuned mass damper for cantilever beam are numerically evaluated and polynomial fit of numerical results is done to obtain the set of equations for optimum parameters of TMD. Study is performed to show the effectiveness of optimum tuned mass damper under earthquake loading.
