Analysis of Failure Modes for scroll wrap in scroll vacuum pump
Based on engineering practice and simulation results of stress and deformation for a scroll wrap in a scroll vacuum pump, the main failure modes are analyzed. In the centre part of scroll wrap, the temperature and inner pressure loads are higher than other parts, this results in larger stress and deformation, stress concentration is also obvious. This analysis shows that wear-out, surface pitting, scuffing failure, seizure, fatigue breakage, and excessive deformation are main failure modes of scroll wrap. The axial deformation and wear-out, and seizure failure have more significant influence on scroll vacuum pumps performance. Selecting appropriate material, improving the properties of material and reducing stress concentration, reducing the temperature of scroll wrap, and modifying the scroll wrap are several valid methods to avoid failure.
