Internationalization Motivations of Emerging Market Enterprises: Institution-based View

Tradit ional mult inational enterprises theories claim that the internationalizat ion of firms should be carried on after possession of the domestic market, which means the monopolistic advantages are the precondition. However, recent experiences reveal that, at least in emerging economies, it is not the case. The firms from emerging markets expand overseas without overwhelming advantages. So how is it happened? For filling this gap, this paper investigates the internationalizat ion motivations of emerging market enterprises and develops an integrated framework to explain the question basing on institution-based view. From the three different pillars, we convince that the compound strengths including internal and external forces impel these emerging market enterprises venturing overseas. Overall, the paper not only probes into the unique motivations that steer them towa rd internationalization comparing to the mult inational enterprises from developed countries, but also sheds light on institution view, which is significant especially in emerging economies.
