Branch Establishment Efficiency of State-owned Commercial Banks in China
After share-reform, the issue how branches of state-owned commercial banks (SOBs) in China will be reconstructed based on market inst itution deserves academic concerns. However, existing literature lacks thorough model-based analysis and empirical study. Especially, there is litt le research on the relation between branch establishment and bank efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to provide model-based analysis and empirical evidence concerning branch establishment of SOBs in China. Explorat ive research on the optimal branch layer and span for SOBs under framework of principal -agent theory was conducted. In addition, DEA method was adopted to empirically test bank efficiency relating branch establishment in 2006-2008. It is found that efficiency of SOBs is significantly lower than that of other domestic joint-stock commercial banks. Moreover, the decreasing returns to scale mainly account for the low efficiency of these state-owned banks. Based on the analysis and test results above, the paper finally puts forward some suggestions about branch establishment of SOBs.
