EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL STUDY ON ZONAL DISINTEGRATION OF DEEP TUNNEL

With the increase of embedded depth of tunnel, the phenomenon of zonal disintegration that the fracture zone and the entire zone formed alternately in deep tunnel has been discovered in many tunnel projects. In order to investigate the failure mechanism of zonal disintegration, a series of similar materials laboratory tests have been carried out. The experimental results reproduced this phenomenon of zonal disintegration. In addition, numerical simulations using Rf PA-Parallel system are conducted to compare with the experimental results. Based on the experimental and numerical results, it is concluded that the phenomenon of zonal disintegration is the result of circular tensile cracks developing spirally within surrounding rock mass, which is under the effect of principal stress in the tunnel direction.
