A new technology to test the elastic shear modulus of soil samples
A new technology to measure the shear wave velocity of soil samples by torsion wave was introduced. It can be theoretically proved that the true shear wave velocity of the samples material can be obtained by this method if the transducers torsion resonant frequency was lower than the first cut-off frequency of the torsion wave propagating in solid cylinder. According to this principle, a new kind of shear wave velocity transducer was developed by utilizing piezoelectric ceramic materials. Then, the shear wave velocity of plexiglass rod was measured with such transducers and the result has only 1.2% relative error compared with the true shear wave velocity.
